Gorgias is worth considering for a small Shopify store once customer support has become a real workload, but it is usually excessive for a shop with only occasional enquiries. Its strongest advantage is the amount of order and customer context available inside each conversation. The deciding factor is volume: the helpdesk is billed by tickets, while the optional AI Agent adds a separate charge for conversations it fully resolves.
In short: Gorgias is a strong buy for a Shopify store handling roughly 300 or more support tickets a month, but a low-volume store should start with a simpler or free inbox.
NTK Score: Gorgias
Our editorial assessment of how confidently we'd recommend this to a small business, scored across the five dimensions shown below: relevance, effort, adoption, commercial value and trust. It is based on desk research (vendor documentation, pricing pages and public sources), not hands-on testing, and it is not a popularity score or a compliance audit.
Gorgias closely fits ecommerce retail through a unified inbox, Shopify order actions, automation and broad app coverage, but weaker reporting and some recent user-reported integration gaps prevent an excellent score.

The vendor documents guided self-service onboarding, 100-plus apps and migration from 80-plus helpdesks, while partner-dependent migration and fine-tuning of rules and AI knowledge add meaningful setup work.

G2 and Capterra users often describe an approachable interface and useful Shopify workflows, but advanced automation needs tuning and recent Trustpilot reports flag bugs, mobile friction and slow resolution.

Published entry pricing and unlimited seats on higher tiers can create strong payroll savings, but sharp plan jumps, overages, separate AI outcome fees, and paid Voice and SMS reduce predictability.

The vendor states it is SOC 2 Type II certified, funded and operationally transparent, but cross-brand AI learning language, broad data-use terms, pricing complexity and sharply negative support signals warrant caution.

What to know before you buy
These don't change the score above: they're conditions worth understanding for specific readers before you commit.
The vendor says AI Agent learns from interactions involving other brands, while stating that identifying query data is deleted; its terms separately permit customer-data use for product improvement. https://docs.gorgias.com/en-US/security-and-privacy-faq-for-gorgias-ai-agent-1997987 and https://www.gorgias.com/legal/terms-of-service
Who this matters to: Retailers whose governance policies prohibit cross-customer AI learning or require a documented opt-out: A retailer may be unable to demonstrate that its customer conversations are excluded from all internal model or product-improvement processes.
What to do: Request written clarification covering internal-model training, retention, de-identification and opt-out controls before enabling AI Agent.

Self-service CSV exports are available, but complete message content and additional objects can require a custom export requested from support. https://docs.gorgias.com/en-US/export-tickets-from-gorgias-404844
Who this matters to: Businesses requiring a complete, independently reproducible archive when changing helpdesks: An exit or audit may depend on vendor support and may require reconciling several exports rather than downloading one complete archive.
What to do: Test exports during the trial and obtain written confirmation of export contents, formats, timing and cost before migration.
The vendor acknowledges that AI output can be inaccurate and provides exclusion and handover controls; recent user reports also allege incorrect answers or delayed action changes. https://docs.gorgias.com/en-US/security-and-privacy-faq-for-gorgias-ai-agent-1997987 and https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.gorgias.com
Who this matters to: Retailers allowing AI to issue refunds, cancel orders or provide consequential policy advice without review: An incorrect autonomous response or stale action configuration could create avoidable order, refund or customer-service errors.
What to do: Begin with low-risk intents, configure mandatory handovers, restrict consequential actions and audit AI conversations before expanding automation.

What Gorgias costs
| Starter | USD 10/month, 50 tickets, unlimited agents |
|---|---|
| Basic | USD 60/month, 300 tickets |
| Pro | USD 360/month, 2,000 tickets |
| Advanced | USD 900/month, 5,000 tickets |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing and ticket volume |
| AI Agent | Separate add-on, about USD 1.00 per resolved conversation on monthly billing or USD 0.90 on most annual plans |
Pricing was checked against Gorgias and the Shopify App Store on 27 July 2026. At 300 tickets a month, the Basic helpdesk costs USD 60. If AI Agent resolves another 100 conversations, allow roughly USD 100 more on monthly billing, for about USD 160 before Voice, SMS or overages.
That can work if automation removes hours of repetitive order-status and return work. It is poor value for only a few daily messages. Measure a normal month of conversations before choosing a plan.
What it actually does for a small store
Gorgias combines email, live chat and social messages in one inbox, with store data beside each conversation. An owner can see order status, use a macro, edit an order or begin a return without switching tabs.
Consider a Monday queue of “where is my order?” messages. Instead of searching Shopify and rewriting the same answer, Gorgias displays tracking details, routes the enquiry and lets AI Agent resolve suitable cases.
Who Gorgias is best for
Gorgias fits Shopify stores with repeatable support work, several channels and enough volume to justify automation. It becomes more attractive when multiple people answer customers or the store uses tools such as Recharge, Klaviyo, Loop Returns or Yotpo.
It is less compelling for a founder handling a small email queue personally, where the setup may outweigh the benefit.
Pros
- Deep Shopify order and customer context inside the support inbox
- Strong automation for repetitive ecommerce questions and actions
- Broad ecommerce integration library
- Helpdesk pricing is based on ticket volume rather than adding a charge for every agent on most plans
Cons
- Separate helpdesk and AI usage meters make forecasting harder
- Costs rise sharply between Basic and Pro
- Meaningful automation requires setup, testing and maintenance
- A low-volume store may get enough value from a simpler free or per-user tool
The real limitations
The main risk is paying for a sophisticated platform before the store has enough volume or process discipline to use it. Costs can jump when ticket growth pushes the store from Basic to Pro while AI resolutions remain separate.
Automation also needs maintenance. Review rules, macros, help-centre content and AI instructions whenever products or policies change. Keep human escalation and sample automated conversations regularly.
Data and privacy
Gorgias processes customer conversations, contact details and connected store data. It uses Google Cloud infrastructure across multiple regions and lists several United States-based feature subprocessors, including OpenAI. Review the DPA, subprocessor list and your enabled integrations before sending sensitive customer information through automated workflows.
Alternatives for a smaller store
Gorgias alternatives by store need
| Gorgias | Shopify Inbox | Help Scout | Tidio | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Growing Shopify support operation | Very small Shopify store | Email-first support team | Chat-first store wanting a lower entry point |
| Pricing model | Ticket volume plus AI resolutions | Free | Per user | Conversation volume plus optional AI |
| Main trade-off | Powerful but costlier and more involved | Limited helpdesk depth | Less ecommerce-native | Less complete order workflow depth |
Shopify Inbox suits basic live chat at no extra cost. Help Scout offers a clean shared inbox with per-user pricing. Tidio is worth comparing when live chat and a lower entry price matter more than deep Shopify workflows.
Frequently asked questions
How this was researched
This is desk research: we read named vendor documentation, pricing pages and independent sources, not enterprise demos, and we do not run deployments inside live businesses. Pricing is taken from the vendor's published rates, with local-currency conversions noted where relevant. Compliance notes reference the legislation and regulatory guidance relevant to each article's region. The question we assess every tool against: could a business with no dedicated IT department pick this up and use it on Monday morning.

Is Gorgias worth it for a very small Shopify store?
Usually not at the beginning. A store with a handful of daily enquiries will often get enough value from Shopify Inbox or a simple shared inbox, then move to Gorgias when repetitive tickets and multiple channels become a measurable workload.
Does Gorgias charge per agent?
No. Gorgias's helpdesk plans are priced by monthly ticket volume, not by number of agents -- every tier, including Starter, currently includes unlimited support agents. AI Agent usage is charged separately for conversations it fully resolves.
How many tickets justify moving to Gorgias?
There is no universal cutoff, but the Basic plan's 300-ticket allowance is a useful decision point. Gorgias becomes easier to justify when those tickets include repeated order-status, returns and product questions that rules or AI can handle consistently.
Can Gorgias replace a customer support employee?
No. It can reduce repetitive work and fully resolve suitable enquiries, but people are still needed for exceptions, complaints, policy judgement and quality checks. Treat automation as capacity for the team, not a reason to remove human oversight.
